When I was 12, New York Ranger Walt Tkaczuk and his wife Valerie briefly rented the house across the street from me in Kitchener, Ontario. With hockey players coming and going, I watched that house like a hawk for the entire summer, running across the road for autographs at every opportunity.
Google Street View that home if you wish. There is nothing wrong with it, but no way would a hockey star rent a house like that today. They’d rent something enormous that fronts on a lake or backs onto a golf course in a town like Kelowna. I’m so thankful the Tkaczuks found their way to my neighbourhood in the summer of ’71.
