I’m listening to the Leafs play the Sabres on the The Fan 590. Joe Bowen is calling play-by-play and Jim Ralph is the colour man. It’s Ralph I want to talk about tonight.

A goalie, drafted in the 8th round by the Blackhawks in 1980, the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, native never played a game in the NHL. And that’s his schtick. Ralph pretends to be a serious underachiever, and, in an age of enormous on-air egos, I find his self-effacing style a breath of fresh air. My winter wouldn’t be the same without him.
