I figure Phil Esposito is 28 years old in this image and Derek Sanderson almost 24. I was 12 at the time (1970) so their age made them attractive to me. They were much closer to my own generation than the one I had begun to reject.
Arguably the two most flamboyant hockey personalities of their era, these athletes exude enormous confidence. And their stylishly long haircuts say so much about them. Not that the length of their hair then would incite a reaction from anyone today. But by the standards of the time, the lengthiness of their hair was seen as a blatant act of rebellion. In the slow-to-conform world of sports I saw these young men as courageous warriors who acted defiantly.
